Veliaj: Sali Berisha and Ilir Meta ready to declare proto-fascists
Erion Veliaj

Commenting on the debate about correcting the naming of the street "4 February" in the street "Martyrs of February 4", the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, said that these reactions of the opposition come every time anti-fascism is talked about in Tirana.

In an interview for Top News, Veliaj called on citizens in Albania and Kosovo not to fall prey to divisive comments by politicians and analysts who are ready to declare themselves proto-fascists.

"I know exactly who works for whom in the interest of foreign groups, or of politicians who aim for division. Therefore, I appeal to my brothers and sisters in Kosovo, do not be separated from these people, look at the facts - we have different opinions, but we cannot have different facts. I mentioned a list of facts and I do not accept comments either from Sali Berisha, or from Luli with Jorida and especially from the LSI, which in 2012 considered the renaming of the road an act of betrayal of the war and the partisans, and today suddenly are ready to declare themselves fascists. There is no problem that a party that started as a socialist movement, today is a 'freedom party', that is, it has gone completely to the extreme right, Albania and Kosovo have always had problems from these "proto-fascists", said Veliaj.

He added that the future belongs neither to fascism nor to Nazism, but to solidarity and brotherhood. "As long as I have breath and as long as I am in this position, I will work for Kosovo to be honored and respected, as we have done in all these examples. I will make sure that we continue to nurture this brotherhood, while acknowledging that, as it happened 79 years ago, so it continues to happen today, that a part of us enjoys division, is invested in division, but has no future. The future belongs to the union and solidarity between Albania and Kosovo, and to the honorable people who take the names of the public spaces in Tirana, Pristina and everywhere else," said Veliaj.

Furthermore, the head of the Municipality of Tirana brought concrete examples of how during the administration that he leads, many personalities of Kosovo have been appreciated and honored. "Are there politicians in Albania and Kosovo, who from their armchairs want to introduce the spirit of division? It definitely has! But, I want to remind you something: In Tirana we have another name, there the street 'Ibrahim Rugova' will meet with the street 'Kristo Luarasi', at Diga e Liqeni, there is the street of 'Kosovarë'. My administration and I built the 'Kosova' school, which burned while the PD was preparing the permit for the building - Ms. Tabaku, Mr. Basha, Petrit Vasili was the deputy mayor of that time, together with Monika and Iliri in the coalition, they came together to give the building in the territory of the school 'Kosova'. Today she has risen stronger, more beautiful, bigger than it was when I was a child and went to that school. I remind you of the 'Adem Jashari' square, which used to be a traffic circle, as was actually the 'Skënderbej' square. Today, the 'Adem Jashari' square has a fountain, it has a lining with marble tiles, trees have been planted, it is truly an ideal place for homage. I remind you that Tirana has a park called 'Nexhmije Pagarusha', located in Parku i Liqeni. For all those who criticize trees, whether in Kosovo, here or across the border, let them come and plant a tree there. Perhaps it is a better way than to make the analyst out of the armchair and sow discord among us. I remind you that, while I am the mayor, we have given only one title "Citizen of Honor" in Tirana and this title was given to Mr. Adem Demaçi, before he passed away, and I'm glad it was the last public act here. The facts are countless, also about the dignity, prestige and respect we have given to the great President Rugova. I am glad that his family is supportive of this joint commemorative work that we are doing in Tirana", emphasized Veliaj.
