Rama: Kurti and I are friends on a personal level, but we have inevitable
Edi Rama speaking to DW

Prime Minister Edi Rama spoke about Albania's European integration process, Germany's role in this journey, and his relations with Albin Kurti, during an interview with Deutsche Welle.

Regarding his relationship with the acting Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, Rama emphasized that he maintains a good personal relationship with him, and that the political differences between them are natural.

"I have a very friendly relationship with Albin on a personal level, but we have inevitable differences in perspectives, and we share these differences openly and directly. In all aspects of cooperation with Kosovo, in interstate cooperation, we have made considerable progress, and we are working together on a major project such as the Durrës-Prishtina railway ," Rama said.

Regarding the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, Rama stressed that Pristina must fully fulfill its obligations before responsibility passes to Belgrade. He added that only by finally breaking away from Serbia's influence will Kosovo be able to move forward independently.

"In my opinion, Kosovo should completely forget about Serbia in the sense that it should unilaterally fulfill all the demands of the dialogue and leave, as we say, the ball in Serbia's court, telling Europe, telling all the countries of Europe, even those that do not yet recognize it, 'here is who we are, we fulfilled them, we signed them and now go and get Serbia's signature.' But it should completely detach itself from Serbia and it does not seem to live with the idea of Serbia," Rama told DW.

European Integration

Rama also emphasized the importance of German support for Albania's European integration, describing Berlin as a strategic and stable partner on the path towards the European Union.

"The challenge is to fulfill all the tasks that this process has and we have a very ambitious calendar agreed with the European Commission to fulfill the tasks within 2027 and to put the European Commission in a position to tell the member states that Albania has successfully completed the negotiations and then we have planned another two years for ratification in all member states. It may be sooner, but we have set the maximum and that is why we have 2030 as a date. It is not an imaginary deadline or a deadline set by desire but it is a deadline set based on what I told you ," said the Prime Minister.
