The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj commented on the draft decision on the audit of old buildings over 50 years old. In an interview for Report TV, Veliaj said that this decision has nothing to do with the demolition of these buildings, but with the inventory and creation of a security passport for each building.

"VKM did not come out yesterday, nor today. It is a discussion that started in 2019, that every city, not only Tirana, should do the audit of buildings. So each building should have its own security passport. It has nothing to do with breaking them. In many of our cities there is an infinity of anomalies. I remind you that in the area of Tufina, in Unit 4, there are many military wards that were built as temporary silos for the military, while families have been living there for 30 years. There are many buildings that, thank God, escaped the earthquake waves, but they need to be checked, how far can this building withstand? Should the column be reinforced, should the walls be reinforced? Every municipality will make a scanner of these constructions, because these same people from the Pulpit that you mentioned, when the disaster happens, they say: Why didn't you take measures? When you take action,

When asked about the fact that the director of the Construction Institute, which should check the structure of old buildings, is in fact the father-in-law of Berisha's candidate for Tirana, Belind Kelliçi, Veliaj said: "About the stories with father-in-law and son-in-law, I I'm not Mrs. Eni, I'm not here to reconcile families, what one panics in the morning and what the other explains at dinner, these are family conversations. My task as mayor is that, when this VKM comes out, when this proposal is given, we implement it and give each building a security passport, so that we know where the column needs to be reinforced, where the walls need to be reinforced and to know this not when the next calamity comes, but to precede it. There is no question of demolishing houses, because they are private residences, everyone makes their own decision on how to develop the property".

Earlier, the director of the Construction Institute, Artan Shkreli, denied the statements of Sali Berisha and Ilir Meta regarding the draft decision for the control of the structure of buildings over 50 years old. In a connection to Euronea, Shkreli, who is also the father-in-law of Sali Berisha's candidate for the Municipality of Tirana, Belind Kelliçi, clarified that for those old buildings, which have suffered damage over the years, intervention will be made to returned safe to live. "This is not a moment to worry. It is a moment when people should be assured that the housing they live in is safe housing. Every day, the Construction Institute receives requests from citizens, but also from banks or real estate companies for other problems, which require certification of the structural condition of the buildings. The idea is that objects that present severe pathologies will be objects that will be intervened to bring them to the seismic norm. So there will be interference in these objects. In facilities that have mild pathologies, they will be dealt with by a routine maintenance that has taken place. The buildings have withstood the earthquakes, but no one gives a guarantee in unexamined buildings as to how long they will withstand the earthquakes", said Shkreli.
