Minister Blendi Gonxhe: Protests are harming tourism, operators report concern from foreign tourists

For two weeks, the capital has been engulfed by citizen protests, which began as an opposition to the tourism project in Zvërnec and are now expanding, focusing on governance.

The protests are peaceful and tension-free, but they have made Albania the center of international media, which is covering daily developments.

In this reality, when the sector has just started the engines of the tourist season, line minister Blendi Gonxhja, in an interview for the "E-Zone" show, says that this is not proper marketing.

"We have entered a season where the figures were giving us expectations that it would be a good and very good season. The figures for May confirmed to us that foreign arrivals were in record numbers with double-digit growth. Reservations were made long ago and the whole situation was normal. But now we are facing protests that are not in the interest of the sector," said Gonxha.

According to the minister, there are some negative signals coming in regarding what is happening in Albania.

"According to contacts with operators in the field, there are calls from booking platforms asking what is happening in Albania, how safe the situation is there, are the roads free for traffic. These questions create uncertainty that is not worth it for us as a country, especially since the protest is not accompanied by a concrete request and it is not predicted how long it will last," the minister said.

Tourism operators are also demanding that this atmosphere of protests be resolved, as according to them, foreign tourists are sensitive to the climate and political atmosphere in the countries they visit.
