Hungary demands the immediate membership of the countries of the Western Balkans in the European Union.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Peter Szijjarto, speaking at a panel of the strategic forum in Bled, Slovenia, together with other representatives of the EU countries, emphasized the need to speed up the accession process to make the European bloc even bigger and stronger. on the global stage.
"Expansion is a must. The process should be expedited as much as possible. We heard the 2030 deadline yesterday. Why not tomorrow? What prevents us from saying this? We should include all the candidate countries of the Western Balkans in the European Union instead of waiting until 2030. Let's open all the chapters. It is a very bad track record in recent years as we have not been able to open chapters with Candidate countries. We must join the Western Balkans and with it, the block will be bigger. We will be stronger," said Peter Szijjarto, Hungary's foreign minister.
The minister listed the benefits that the European Union would receive from the acceptance of the countries of the Western Balkans, starting from the economy, energy security and avoiding the intervention of other states outside the union in the region.
"The European Union needs the Western Balkans more than this region needs European membership. We have to be quick and prioritize. We have to prioritize expansion."
France also supported this idea.
"If we want peace, security and stability on the continent, we must enlarge the EU. We must do this for the candidate countries and for the European Union itself," said Laurence Boone, France's minister for European affairs.
Meanwhile, during Monday, in the same forum, the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, said that the European Union should be ready to accept new members in 2030. The six countries of the Western Balkans, including Albania, are in stages different aspects of the bloc's membership process, while member states have often appeared that have hindered progress.
