Unlike the government, the representation of women running for the country's municipalities is lower. 141 candidates compete for 61 municipalities of the country, of which only 17 are women.
In parliamentary decision-making, the number of women is higher. In the elections of April 25, 2021, women candidates received 47 seats out of 140 seats in the assembly.
In these local elections, the Socialist Party competes with 8 women candidates, the Democratic Party with 4, the same for the Together We Win coalition, while only one for the PDIU.
"This is bad news for women in politics, but also for the movement of women in politics, which has always been very active in strengthening the positions of women in politics and in advocating to have as many women in leadership positions as possible. So for this reason I say that 17 women in 141 candidates is bad news because these are more candidates and I am sure that the number of women winners will be even smaller than the 17 out of 61 municipalities that we will have. So for this reason I say that we have taken steps back when it comes to the participation of women in politics" - said Iris Luarasi.
The low representation of women in the leadership of the municipalities is also a consequence of the difficulties that women face to have support both inside the party and outside it, in a society that is used to men's decision-making in politics.
"The confrontation of women at the local level is head-to-head and you definitely have to have a woman who is very politically supported and who is able to get votes and on the other hand we know that generally in local elections and I'm not talking here for Tirana but I'm talking about other areas, of course there are many other forces that intervene when it comes to the voting process" - said Iris Luarasi
Since 1992, in 9 electoral processes, only 6% of the elected mayors are women. Figures that clearly show that men predominate at the head of municipalities./Tch
