A new species of dinosaur with an "armored" body has been discovered on the Isle of Wight in Great Britain for the first time in 142 years.

They belong to a group of herbivorous dinosaurs known as "ankylosaurus", while its fossils were found in the island's "Wessex" formation, a fossil site dating between 145 and 66 million years ago.

The new species has been named "Vectipelta barretti", after Professor Paul Barrett, who worked for 20 years at the Natural History Museum in London.

It is the second armored dinosaur found on the island, the first being Polacanthus foxii, discovered in 1865.

"For almost 142 years, all Isle of Wight ankylosaurus remains have been assigned to Polacanthus foxii, a famous Isle of Wight dinosaur, now all these finds need to be revisited because we have described this new species," said Stuart Pond, a researcher in the Department of Earth Sciences at the Natural History Museum.

V barretti differs from its ancestor P foxii in the neck and back bones.
