Authorities in Washington, D.C., have urged people to be careful after an estimated 250 million bees escaped after a truck carrying them overturned.

Emergency forces were assisted by professional beekeepers as the truck contained over 31,000 kilograms of beehives with honeydew.

"The goal is to save as many bees as possible," the sheriff's office in Whatcom, where the incident occurred, announced.

For this reason, the area was cordoned off and remained so until the bees were rescued.

The beekeepers worked with the police to repair the hives, and by afternoon a large portion of their bees had returned to the hives.
