Jakarta is now the most populous city in the world. The list is topped by Asian countries, but the Indonesian capital has overtaken Dhaka in Bangladesh and Tokyo in Japan.

With 42 million inhabitants, Jakarta has surpassed the 33rd place it ranked in 2018 and Tokyo was at the top.

Dhaka follows with 36 million inhabitants and, according to a United Nations report, is expected to become "the world's largest city by mid-century."

The new ranking shows the rapid change sweeping the world with the emergence of overpopulated megacities.

Half of the world's 8.2 billion people now live in cities. Nine of the world's 10 most populous cities are in Asia.

The only exception is Cairo in Egypt, which ranked seventh with 25 million inhabitants, twice the population of New York.

Other cities in the top 10 are New Delhi (30.2 million), Shanghai (29.6 million), Guangzhou (27.6 million), Manila (24.7 million), Kolkata (22.5 million) and Seoul (22.5 million).

According to estimates, it is expected that by 2050 there will be over 15 thousand cities in the world and most of them will have populations of no less than 250 thousand inhabitants.
