Spain's Sagrada Familia has become the tallest church in the world after workers placed the first part of the cross atop its central tower, dedicated to Jesus Christ.

The newly installed section marked the beginning of the final phase of construction of the tower, which will reach 172.5 meters.

The record was held by Ulm Cathedral in Germany with a height of 161.5 meters.

Designed by renowned architect Antoni Gaudi, the cross in the place of worship is clad in white ceramic and glass, materials selected for their brilliance and resistance to weather.

Sagrada Familia becomes the tallest church in the world

The completed cross will be 17 meters high and 13.5 meters wide, approximately the size of a five-story building.

Gaudi worked on the basilica from 1883 until his death in 1926.

Next year, to mark a century since his death, project leaders hope to have completed the exterior of the main tower, dedicated to Jesus Christ, making it Barcelona's tallest building.

Once completed, the Sagrada Familia will have 18 towers.

Pope Leo XIV has been invited to lead a memorial mass and the tower's opening ceremony next June.
