Intelligent people have this common sleeping habit: Are you a night owl or an early bird?

People of the night are more extroverted and tend to be poets, artists and inventors. Morning people are more often than not clerks and accountants, writes Jim Horne, a professor of psychophysiology in the UK.

People’s ability to control their circadian rhythm, a biorhythm that spans a 24-hour period, is a sign of intelligence. Scientists have come to the conclusion after numerous studies conducted on this topic.

It is said that our ancestors were more inclined to listen to biorhythm and accordingly went to sleep and woke up, which many still consider a good habit.

However, nowadays people determine for themselves when it is time to go to sleep and wake up, despite the circadian rhythm, some less and some more.

For most animals, the time of sleep and wakefulness is determined by natural circumstances and is synchronized by the circadian rhythm that controls the sleep cycle like everything else.

However, humans have a unique ability to cognitively bypass their internal biological clock and its rhythmic effects, which represents a very beneficial sleep habit.

Although there are some individual differences in circadian rhythm, where some individuals are more of a night owl than others, humans are essentially day owls because they rely heavily on sight navigation - according to a study entitled Why Night owls Are More Intelligent ”.

Study authors Satoshi Kanazawa and Kajai Perina say people who are 'night birds' may be more intelligent precisely because of this ability to control their biorhythm.

Our ancestors went to bed early and got up early, and if we deviate from this norm it means that we are more in line with modern life and this in itself is a sign of intelligence - claim the authors of the study.

However, it should be noted that nowadays people stay awake longer due to artificial lighting. In ancient times, our ancestors went to bed right after sunset because they could do nothing in the dark. They also got up early with the first rays of the sun.

"Night birds" are more successful in intelligence tests

Researchers at the University of Madrid also addressed the issue and found that 'night birds' score better on intelligence tests than those who go to bed early and wake up early.

"They are more extroverted and tend to be poets, artists and inventors, while the morning guys are often clerks and accountants," said Jim Horne, a professor of psychophysiology at Loughborough University in Britain.

If we have a clear desire and listen to our body, e.g. refusing to get up in the morning, it means that we are independent and people who follow their passions and show clear signs are more creative and come up with their own solutions - added Satoshi Kanazawa and Kaja Perina.
