Last year, Instagram added a way for users to filter out some "sensitive" content from the Explore tab. Now Instagram is expanding this feature, giving users the ability to disable such content in recommendations across the app.

Instagram does not offer much transparency on how it defines sensitive content, or which ones matter. Introducing the sensitive content control feature last year, the company described sensitive content as "posts that do not necessarily violate our rules, but may be disturbing to some people, such as posts that may be sexually provocative or violent ”.

The controls will be applied very quickly to search, Reels, hashtag pages, to the "account you can follow" and to posts that are suggested to feed. Instagram says the changes will apply to all users in the coming weeks.

Instead of allowing users to turn off certain content, Instagram control mechanisms provide only three functions: viewing less content, a standard feature, and an option for viewing more sensitive content. Instagram users under the age of 18 can not select this feature.

A Help Center post explains content controls in more detail, describing the category of content that "hinders our ability to create a secure community."

According to Instagram, this includes:

"Content that can show violence, such as people who can fight. (remove graphically violent content).

Content that may be sexually explicit or provocative, such as images of people in transparent clothing (remove content that contains nudity or adult sexual activity.)

Content that promotes the use of certain regulated products, such as tobacco or e-cigarettes, adult products and services or medications (we remove content that is intended to market most of the regulated products)

Content that may promote or display cosmetic procedures.

"Content that may aim to sell products or services that rely on health-related statements, such as promoting an integrator to help a person lose weight."
