A major recall is underway for several acne-treating products due to concerns about high levels of an ingredient that may cause cancer.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued the recall alert on Tuesday, March 11, announcing that brands like La Roche-Posay, Proactive, Walgreens and others were recalling products due to benzene content.
In light of the results, L'Oréal Paris voluntarily recalled its La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo viral acne treatment in the US.
Over the past few months, the product has gained significant attention from both skincare influencers and dermatologists on social media.
The product will soon be replaced with an improved formula, the company said in a statement to Bloomberg.
Other recalled products include: Walgreens Acne Cleanser; Proactiv Emergency Relief Blemish Cream Benzoyl Peroxide 5%; Proactiv Skin Softening Exfoliator; SLMD Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Lotion; and Walgreens Tinted Acne Treatment Cream.
According to the FDA, the health effects of exposure to benzene can vary based on factors such as the amount, duration, and route of exposure, as well as the user's age and existing medical conditions.
