With tears in her eyes, 22-year-old Marigona Halilaj told the most painful story of her life.

The young woman from Gjilan said that her mom killed her father for the sake of the children, after Marigona's father used violence and tried to kill her brother with a knife.

"I live in Gjilan with my mother. I come from a family with many sacrifices in life, especially from my mother. It's that my mom had domestic violence. Pronounced violence. I was born in 2002, I didn't experience much because I was little where my father passed away. My father, unfortunately, was a person who abused in the family. Violence from the worst.

In 2005, my father passed away. My father lived in Switzerland, my mom stayed in Kosovo even though she was married and had two children. Mom wanted to distance herself from that person as much as possible. The cause of the violence came to murder. I was 2 and a half years old at the time. My mom tried in every way to report him to the police. She reported him to the police many times, she wanted to separate from him, but it didn't work. The situation got worse and worse, until it ended in tragedy. He wanted to kill us all as a family, he wanted to kill my brother. Mom had no other choice. Dad had a knife in his hand to kill my brother and the other girls. In June 2005, my mother was reported to the police herself and the state took us away. My father was married 3-4 times to other women and with each of them he had children. Mom did not have a legal marriage with her father. All the father's wives and children have sent a letter to the court and asked for the release of the midwife.
