Saving money is often boring and tiring. Of course, the desire to spend and pamper yourself also comes into play. This is also why the “four buckets” method is going viral on TikTok, as according to users of the app, it is a financial practice that is both simple and effective for saving money.
"The idea? Divide your income into four distinct categories and assign a goal for each," says Alex King, financial coach and founder of the personal finance website Generation Money.
The “four buckets” trick divides your money into two buckets for spending (essentials and lifestyle) and two for accumulating wealth (short-term savings and long-term investments). “This ensures that your basic needs are covered, but you’ll save money for the future and can splurge without feeling guilty.”
As TikTok creator @bobeema explains, this is less stressful than tracking every expense. “It’s a helpful mental and visual trick to get you thinking about what category your expenses and income go into each month,” King adds. “This makes tracking your money more intentional and can lead to better financial decisions.”
The method also helps you stick to a budget, especially if you’re new to saving or prone to overspending. “If you’re someone who feels like you’re not in control of your money every month, or that money just seems to ‘disappear,’ then the ‘four buckets’ method is for you,” he says.
So the theory is simple! Want more money for fun? “Grow” your lifestyle bucket. Want faster savings? Throw more money in there. King recommends starting with your basic fixed expenses, then adjusting the rest as needed.
One last tip? Give your buckets more meaningful names. For example, instead of simply saving, use “Beach Fund” or instead of investments, “Peace of Mind.” This makes your goals seem realistic and keeps you saving.
