Mel Lodge was only 4 years old when she first experienced personality disorder, a psychiatric syndrome characterized by the presence of two or more clear identities, often formed due to trauma.
Today she is 30 years old, Mel says her body is home to 50 unique 'pieces'. The former ballet teacher is using the Tik Tok platform to raise awareness about the multiple personality and says that her 'parts' take control from 5-20 times a day.
When asked about her illness, Mel spoke as one of her teenage identities, 18-year-old Zara. "We often get comments from people who say it is very rare and we can not have it, but it is irritating because it is not as rare as they think," she said.
"Then the part that 'we have to be violent, scary and commit crimes' because that's how they saw it in the movies. "It seems very difficult for people to believe that this is so and not as dramatic as in the movies."
Mel says her therapist believes the disorder started at age 4 and initially thought it was psychosis, but after 3 months diagnosed it with multiple personality. When a new identity takes control, Mel says she experiences a brief moment of confusion, anxiety and sometimes, loss of consciousness. The latter means that her personalities also suffer from amnesia, so they need to find a way to remember.
"We need everything written on a board and we have files prepared for the 'parts' that may come out which do not know what is happening. When we have meetings, we do our best to get the right one, but we do not have it completely in hand. In addition to the information, we have a list of positive stimulants that serve this purpose. "For example, Anna meets a nutritionist, so if another of us is in control, they need to know how to show it."
After meetings with 30 health professionals, Mel was diagnosed with DID at the age of 26 years. Through therapy, they were able to ascertain that there were 50 personalities, 11 of whom were the most dominant.
Zara, 18 years old - the one who deals with the daily routine, responsible, social, noisy and organized.
Anna, 16 - gentle, optimistic, perfectionist, ballerina.
Chloe, 4-5 - the childish, very noisy, tries to make other children happy.
Tammi, 19 - direct, sometimes irritated, antisocial, protective.
Danial, 20 - protective, shy, scared of people.
Andrew, 10 - altruist, perfectionist, creator.
Charlie, 29 - similar to Mel, sporty, loyal, obsessed with psychology.
Leah, 14 - shy, loves sports like hockey and volleyball.
Doe, 12 - animalistic, loving, mature for her age.
Sky, 7 - shy, loves drawing and painting, creative, mischievous.
