Instagram tests video selfie to verify teens

Instagram is exploring new ways to verify the age of teenagers using the platform and make sure the rules for using the social network are enforced.

The Meta-owned app is testing selfie videos with face-analyzing software as a new age verification method.

Some users on Instagram try to bypass the age rule over 13, modifying the date of birth to make them look over 18.

But American teenagers who do this will now be given three ways to verify age: upload ID, ask three adult users to guarantor for them, or take a selfie video.

Meta says she hopes the new methods will ensure teenagers have an "age-appropriate experience" on Instagram.

The tech giant has previously faced criticism for the safety of teenagers and children on its platforms. Several U.S. states investigated Instagram last year over children's experiences in the photo-sharing app, in response to leaks by Facebook signalman Frances Haugen.

Under the new changes, Instagram will automatically recommend more educational and fun materials to teens and not content that may be inappropriate for their age.
