As time passes and we age, the cognitive capacities of our minds begin to deteriorate. This is the inevitable and natural process of aging, which affects all aspects of life.
While we cannot stop the effects of aging, we can slow and in some cases reverse them. What can we do to stop brain aging?
1. Learn a new language
Learning a new language brings you many benefits. Besides being a personal skill, it is an excellent brain exercise that slows down and stops memory loss. Language learning activities will help you remember, recognize and understand words, which takes cognitive function to very high levels. Learning a language is a powerful weapon against memory loss and improves vocabulary and grammar, as well as mental and verbal fluency.
2. Word games and puzzles are also good exercise
Another exercise that enriches general knowledge and helps prevent memory loss is solving crosswords, word games and puzzles. Sudoku or Scrabble and crosswords significantly reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.
3. Don't underestimate the power of music
Music and music therapy provide good brain exercise, as they not only improve mental focus, but support healthy cognitive functioning. While classical music is known to boost brain power and improve verbal fluency skills in babies and toddlers, music is used as a "treatment" for memory loss. Just listen to your favorite type of music every day and try to remember the lyrics and melody and sing along. It's fun and useful at the same time.
4. Talk to yourself
Studies show that people who talk to themselves have a lower risk of developing illnesses that cloud their judgment. In other words, talking to yourself and telling yourself stories is a great way to slow down memory loss and focus on important details. Moreover, it is an excellent emotional exercise.
5. Read different books and try to remember the subject
One of the best exercises you can do for your brain is to read a book. From books to essays and magazine articles, read whatever catches your eye. A tip: try to recall the content of a book you read years ago, as it is a memory-strengthening exercise.
6. Try brain-boosting exercises
There are many exercises and games specifically designed to stimulate the brain. Hand-eye coordination is also important. Don't push yourself with too hard exercises. Even the lightest ones activate neurons and synapses, sending messages to the nervous system and preventing cognitive deficits.
