Australian model Lucy Markovic, who became known to the general public with her participation in "Australia's Next Top Model" and conquered the catwalks of big houses such as Armani and Versace, passed away at the age of 27.

The news of her death was confirmed on Thursday by the modeling agency that represented her, Elite Model Management, through a post on social media.

According to the announcement, the 27-year-old was battling a rare brain disease. Hours before her death was announced, a story was posted on her official Instagram account revealing that she was in critical condition.

"Lucy was a shining light. Modeling was one of her dreams and we are deeply honored to have stood by her on this journey. She brought grace, strength and beauty to her work. But most of all, she brought herself, her warmth, her laughter and her brilliance," Elite's statement said.

Lucy Markowitz first came to the public eye as a teenager, participating in the ninth season of "Australia's Next Top Model" in 2015, where she became a finalist, losing in the final to Brittany Beatty.

Her presence in the competition was enough to pave the way for an impressive international career.

The model has walked international catwalks and collaborated with major fashion houses such as; Versace, Oscar de la Renta, Bulgari, Givenchy and Dolce & Gabbana, while also starring in Victoria Beckham's campaigns.

At the same time, she graced the pages of magazines such as Marie Claire and many international editions of Vogue.

Three weeks ago, Lucy Markowitz announced via Instagram that she would undergo surgery for an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in her brain, a rare vascular condition that can cause brain damage and stroke.

As she recounted, the malformation was the size of a golf ball and had been causing her constant epileptic seizures. She had been battling it herself for more than four years.

After news of her death, shocked colleagues and fashion personalities rushed to pay their last respects publicly.

Among them is Donatella Versace, who a few weeks ago resigned from her position as artistic director of the Versace house after 28 years.

"I am so sorry to hear the news about Lucy Markowitz. Rest in peace, beautiful girl," she wrote.
