Joe and Shirley Cloyes DioGuardi receive Kosovo citizenship

Former US Congressman Joseph DioGuardi and his wife, Shirley Cloyes DioGuardi, have officially become citizens of the Republic of Kosovo.

The citizenship decrees were handed over during a special ceremony by the acting president of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu.

He stated in Pristina that the political crisis is placing Kosovo in a difficult situation.

"I am here, as you know, to make sure that you have a president. And I hope that this happens before I leave. If it does not happen before I leave, you will be in big trouble, because you have enemies who are already ready to upset the balance in the Balkans. That is why it is important that I came with my loud voice to wake up the Albanian people. This is not the time to sleep, because people are ready to take what you have. I am sorry to say this, but you can see for yourself," said the former American congressman.

Joe DioGuardi has been one of the most prominent Albanian-American figures in American politics for decades and a strong supporter of Kosovo in Washington.

His wife, Shirley Cloyes DioGuardi, has also been continuously engaged in the Albanian cause and the rights of Albanians in the Balkans.

Acting President Albulena Haxhiu said that Joe DioGuardi and Shirley Cloyes DioGuardi have been among the most powerful voices in the US in support of Kosovo and its independence. According to her, they have been friends of Kosovo long before the declaration of statehood and are now its citizens.

Shirley Cloyes DioGuardi also praised the acquisition of Kosovo citizenship and recalled the couple's commitment to supporting the Kosovo cause since 1989.
