Paris is a city loved for good food, fine art and unique fashion.

But a new index from the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) also says that Paris is the most powerful city in the world for tourism.

The WTTC, a non-profit tourism industry body based in the United Kingdom, analyzed tourism data from 2022 to see which were the places where travelers wanted to spend the most money.

However, the overall list of the most powerful tourist cities does not only consider museum tickets and hotel rooms. Another factor was the extent of investment by local and national governments and businesses to make these cities attractive as tourist destinations.

For example, Paris, which topped the list, is preparing to host the 2024 Summer Olympics. Although only less than 5% of facilities will be newly built for the Olympics, the city is spending resources on infrastructure, security and measures others that will enable preparations to host the whole world at these Olympic Games.

According to the accounts, the total total spending on tourism in the French capital reached 35.6 billion dollars.

United States in tourism

Two countries managed to have three cities each on the WTTC list. First place was the United States, with Orlando, New York City and Las Vegas representing the country.

Although each of these cities manages to provide a significant share of tourism revenue, they attract different types of travelers: Orlando is best known for families visiting the city parks, Las Vegas is an internationally known center for gambling and nightlife, while New York attracts foodies and art lovers.

Of this group of cities, Orlando was the one with the highest revenue, a whopping $31 billion by 2022.

China on the rise

Three Chinese cities – Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou – made the top 10 for 2022.

Several other Chinese destinations improved their ranking in this index. In particular, the beach holidays of Sanya – on the sunny island of Hainan in southern China – and Macau were mentioned as places to consider in the future.

China has invested heavily in tourism and started advertising to foreign travelers now that its border has reopened. Macau is the only city in China where gambling is legal and it is easier for most tourists to get there without a visa – unlike the rest of the country.

WTTC predicts that by 2032, China will dominate its ranking.

"Big cities like London, Paris and New York will remain global powerhouses but, over the next few years, Beijing, Shanghai and Macau will move up the list of top cities to visit," Julia Simpson said in a statement. , President and CEO of WTTC.

Other places

Of course, there are more than two countries that were represented on the WTTC list. Tokyo, Mexico City and London were ranked seventh, eighth and ninth respectively, rounding out the rankings.

Somehow, it's just as interesting to see which cities didn't make the list.

Two cities that surprised by their absence from the ranking were from the Middle East, which has grown greatly in popularity over the past decade.

Although luxury Dubai and World Cup-hosting Doha topped the list as the cities with the highest amount of tourism revenue, they did not score as highly in other categories and thus did not make the top ten. seen.

Amsterdam, Barcelona and Singapore also fell victim to the same phenomenon, having more points for the amount of money spent by visitors, but failing to make the overall "most powerful" list.
