Ukrainian forces have liberated 160 square kilometers of territory during an ongoing "counteroffensive operation" in the eastern Donetsk region, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on September 18.
Ukrainian forces have spent the past month pushing back Russian troops after they advanced 15-20 kilometers toward the strategic Dobropillia-Kramatorsk highway, near the town of Pokrovsk. Since late August, Ukrainian units have regained control of many villages in the area.
Seven settlements were recaptured in the Dobropillia and Pokrovsk sectors during the operation, Zelensky said, citing a report from Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi.
Ukrainian troops have also captured nearly 100 Russian soldiers, according to him.
"Ukraine is rightfully defending its positions and land," Zelensky said. "We are thwarting all of Russia's plans - plans to destroy our state."
Zelensky said an additional 170 kilometers of Ukrainian territory "have been cleared of Russian forces." However, he did not provide further details about the condition or strategic status of the areas.
"Russian losses since the start of our counteroffensive in the Pokrovsk direction alone, over the past few weeks, exceed 2,500. Of these, over 1,300 Russian soldiers have been killed," Zelensky said, adding that Ukraine's counteroffensive operations in Donetsk Oblast are continuing.
Zelensky also repeated his call for continued military assistance from international partners and demanded tightening of sanctions to put pressure on Russia in peace negotiations.
The statement comes amid increasingly frequent counterattacks from the Ukrainian side, which has been in a strategic defensive position along the front line in eastern Ukraine for nearly two years.
Ukrainian forces liberated the village of Zarichné in the Donetsk region on September 8. The operation was carried out by soldiers of the 425th Assault Regiment, better known as Skelia.
Earlier this month, the same unit reported clearing Novoekonomichne and Udachne, two villages in the area of the attacked city of Pokrovsk.
However, Russia pursued high-intensity offensive operations across the frontline during the summer. According to the Ukrainian mapping and monitoring group Deep State, Russian forces occupied 1,548 square kilometers during the summer, significantly more than the 659 square kilometers occupied during the equivalent period in 2024.
Zelensky warned on September 16 that Russia is preparing two major offensive operations for the fall. However, continued losses in personnel and equipment could hamper Moscow's ability to carry them out, the president added.
