Contrary to its previous position, the Spanish Catholic Church wants to financially compensate all victims of sexual abuse in church institutions.

The Spanish Bishops' Conference (CEE) announced that it has approved a comprehensive plan to compensate victims of sexual violence. This plan includes psychological, social, spiritual and economic aspects. The victims are mostly children and young people.

The goal is to compensate all victims of sexual abuse, even in cases where the perpetrator is dead or there is no court decision. This also applies to cases that have expired or can no longer be prosecuted for other reasons. For compensation, the church only needs to believe that the crime has occurred.

"We feel pain and shame"

"Claims will be examined on a case-by-case basis," explained CEE General Secretary César García Magán. "We feel pain and shame, and reparations must happen as soon as possible."

César García Magán did not elaborate on possible compensation amounts or whether the church is considering selling some assets to pay the compensations. "In principle, they (compensations) should be paid by the perpetrators who committed the crime and, if necessary, by the institutions involved. For example, if the perpetrator is dead, the institution will pay," said García Magán.

The decision of the Conference of Bishops constitutes a turning point. Until now, the Catholic Church in Spain had paid reparations only after relevant court decisions. Also previously, the Catholic Church in Spain had refused to pay compensation to victims, in cases where the abuser had died, which often happens.

Different figures

In June, a report by the Spanish Church was published, which said that between 1945 and 2022, at least 927 minors were sexually abused in church institutions by 728 church workers.

And according to the Spanish media, there should be more than 200,000 people in Spain who have been victims of sexual violence by priests. The Conference of Bishops considers this figure to be exaggerated. DW
