A serious event shook the city of Munich this morning, where powerful explosions and gunshots were recorded, causing an immediate response from law enforcement and emergency services.
According to initial reports published by the Bild newspaper, one person was found dead and at least one other was injured by gunfire. It is suspected that the perpetrator set a trap in his parents' apartment, set the house on fire and then committed suicide.
The incident took place on Lerchenauer Straße, where authorities have cordoned off a large area around the scene. Since the early hours of the morning, a thick cloud of smoke has been visible from afar, while residents have been asked to avoid the area for safety reasons. Traffic in this part of the city has been temporarily suspended.
Police Chief Thomas Schelshorn told the media that “there is no danger to citizens” and stressed that this incident “has no connection to the Oktoberfest celebrations.” Pyrotechnics specialists are engaged in checking the apartment where the explosion occurred, while investigations to fully clarify the incident are still ongoing.
In an official announcement, police announced that the situation will cause delays and traffic congestion, while a school located near the scene will remain closed until further notice.
