The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, declared yesterday evening that the Serbian Armed Forces have moved to a lower level of military readiness due to the situation created in Kosovo.
"We have moved from a state of higher readiness to a lower level of readiness for war. But we still have a significant number of forces and enough to help our people, people should know this," said Vucic in an interview with the Serbian media 'TVHappy'.
Serbia put its armed forces on the highest combat alert after violence erupted in northern Kosovo in May after Albanian mayors stormed several Serb-majority municipal buildings. The local Serbian population in the north of Kosovo boycotted the April elections in which those mayors were elected.
The European Union and the United States of America have called on Prishtina to organize new elections in the Serb-majority area to calm tensions and for Serbia to abandon combat readiness and remove troops from the border with Kosovo.
As a result of the protests in the north of Kosovo, there were clashes between the protesters and the KFOR troops, injuring dozens of officers who were in front of the municipal buildings in order to secure the new mayors.
Seeing the situation, by order of Vučić, the Serbian Interior Minister signed the order to move all Serbian military forces to the border with Kosovo in the form of pressure for the developments taking place in the north.
