Russia masses troops in eastern Ukraine, major offensive expected

Russia is massing its forces around Chasiv Yar in eastern Ukraine as it seeks to advance into the Donetsk region, authorities in Kiev reported.

Russian forces appear to be trying to capture the strategic town, which lies a few kilometers west of Bakhlu, which fell under Russian occupation last May, said Illia Yevlash, a Ukrainian spokesman for the operational group that oversees the eastern front line.

Yevlash added that the Kremlin hopes to advance towards the cities of Kostiantynivka, Kramatorsk and Sloviansk.

The Russian military is advancing daily in its invasion of new territory in Ukraine, albeit slowly, as Ukrainians face a shortage of munitions and soldiers.

In recent weeks, the towns of Avdiivka and Petrovske were occupied by the Russians, along with the villages of Stepove and Sieverne.
