Poland has ended the production of fur clothing, according to the Italian daily Wired.

President Karol Nawrocki signed a law on Tuesday banning the use of fur, making Poland the 18th European Union member state to end a practice that resulted in the deaths of approximately three million mink, foxes, dogs, raccoons and chinchillas each year.

The decision strikes at the heart of a sector – in which Poland was the leading European producer and the second largest globally, surpassed only by China.

According to the data, 281 farms were still operating across the country, including 169 mink farms, 37 fox farms, 11 dog, raccoon and 64 chinchilla farms.

The president's signature came after the law was approved by the Sejm, the lower house of the Polish parliament, and the Senate last month, thanks to a cross-party agreement.

The only opposition came from the far-right party "Konfederacja", as "Notes from Poland" reports.

The bill stipulates an immediate ban on new farms and that existing facilities must cease operations by December 31, 2033.

A gradual compensation system will incentivize early closures: those who abandon their activity by January 1, 2027, will receive up to 25% of their average income for the years 2020-2024.

The decline of the fur industry in Poland had long begun.

According to data cited by "Business of Fashion", mink fur exports from Poland have fallen significantly from 402 million euros in 2015 to just 71 million euros in 2024.

The number of mink farms across the country had fallen from 810 in 2015 to 281 currently.

According to polls, 66% of Poles support the Polish government's decision.
