A US warship and two merchant vessels were attacked in the Red Sea on Sunday, the Pentagon said.

The attack has been seen as a possible major escalation in aggression in Middle Eastern waters, where Iran-backed Yemeni rebels have escalated attacks on ships linked to the West and Israel.

The Pentagon confirmed the attack on Sunday, shortly after British officials said they received reports of drone strikes in the Bab al-Mandab strait of the Red Sea, although neither government gave details, including who was responsible for the attack.

An anonymous US official told The Associated Press that the attacks lasted about five hours in Sanaa, Yemen.

A second anonymous government source said the warship USS Carney shot down at least one drone during the attack.

The attacks come as Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels have targeted Israel amid its war with Hamas.

The group said in a statement on Sunday that it attacked two "Israeli" ships, the first with a missile and the second with a drone, the Times of Israel reported, although it remains unclear whether the US Navy ship was among the two vessels the Houthis said that he had attacked.
