Pope Leo XIV visited the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, in honor of the main place of worship of the Turkish metropolis.

Pope Leone visited the place of worship without shoes, as required by Islamic law.

He is the third Pope to visit this mosque after Pope Benedict XVI in 2006 and Pope Francis in 2014.

Unlike his predecessors, Pope Leo did not visit the Hagia Sophia, converted from a museum to a mosque in recent years - which is located opposite.

The Pope did not pause for a moment of silent prayer, as Pope Benedict XVI did – his visit took place a few months after the Regensburg speech incident – which caused strong opposition in the Muslim world – and a few years later, Pope Francis did.

"They told me he would pray and I said yes, and I said: if you want to perform an act of worship, you can do it, this is the house of Allah, but Pope Leone said: no, I prefer to visit the mosque, to feel the atmosphere of the mosque," the mosque's muezzin, Asgin Tunca, told reporters.

"Pope Leone spent his visit to the Mosque in silence, in a spirit of reflection and listening. With deep respect for the place and for the faith of those gathered there in prayer," the Holy See press office said,

Pope Leo XIV was received by the Grand Mufti of Istanbul and the muezzin, who explained the history and architecture of the country.

Built in 1600 under the rule of Sultan Ahmet I, the mosque is decorated with 21,043 Turkish-colored ceramic tiles, giving it the name "Blue Mosque".

Like every visitor to the mosque, Papa Leone took off his shoes at the entrance, standing in white socks.

He stopped in particular to admire the mihrab, the point indicating the direction of Mecca, crowned by an inscription of a verse from the Quran, Surah 19, relating to Mary, a figure venerated not only in Christianity but also in Islam.
