Federica Mogherini, the former High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy and rector of the College of Europe in Bruges, who was detained on Tuesday afternoon in Belgium as part of an investigation into an EU-funded tender to create a postgraduate program for young diplomats, has been released.

According to the Italian news agency Agi, two other Italian citizens have been detained along with Mogherini:

Stefano Sannino, ambassador and former Secretary General of the European External Action Service (EEAS), the institution that had initiated the tender worth 990 thousand euros for the years 2021–2022, and Cesare Zegretti, manager of the College of Europe in Bruges.

The investigation is being led by the Federal Prosecutor's Office in Bruges in cooperation with the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO). Charges have been brought against the individuals involved, including public procurement fraud, corruption, conflict of interest, breach of professional secrecy and unfair competition.

Belgian and European authorities are continuing investigations to fully clarify the role of each in the tender procedures.
