The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, expressed his condolences on the death of Silvio Berlusconi, whom he called an extraordinary politician.

"For me, Silvio was a dear man, a true friend. I have always sincerely admired his wisdom, his ability to make balanced and visionary decisions even in the most difficult times," Putin said in his message. "Berlusconi will be remembered as a constant and principled supporter of strengthening friendly relations between our countries."

Like former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, Berlusconi forged a close relationship with Moscow during Putin's first years in the Kremlin, from 2000. Both became personal friends of Putin and were criticized in the West for supporting the annexation of Crimea in 2014.

At the start of the war in Ukraine, Berlusconi also said that Putin was pushed to invade the neighboring country and that he wanted to put people in power in Kiev "for good".

In a televised interview on Monday, Putin called Berlusconi "a world-class politician, whom few politicians resemble today in the international arena."
