The dinar issue, Serbian pensioners are protesting today in the north of Kosovo

A protest by Serbian pensioners is being held today in the north of Mitrovica at 12:00, as a sign of reaction to the decision of the Central Bank of Kosovo to ban the use of the dinar as a means of payment. The call for this protest was made public by Lista Serbe through the Facebook social network.

The deputy police director for the northern region, Veton Elshani, has confirmed that the authorities have received information about this protest and are prepared to monitor it. In the four northern municipalities of Kosovo, where the majority of the population are Serbs, on Sunday, several new graffiti were noticed with the text "When the army returns to Kosovo, the Northern Brigade lives".

The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, in an address to the Serbian community of Kosovo, clarified that the decision of the Central Bank of Kosovo does not prevent Serbia from helping their community, and that Kosovo has not banned the use of the dinar, nor any other currency. other. He emphasized that the regulation of the Central Bank of Kosovo, which entered into force on February 1, requires the euro to be the only acceptable currency for cash transactions.

Thus, the CBK has emphasized that this Regulation does not prohibit or limit the acceptance of funds in bank accounts in Euros in licensed banks, nor does it limit the exchange activity of any currency carried out by banking or non-banking financial institutions licensed by the CBK. All citizens who already have a bank account in Euro, in any licensed bank in Kosovo, can use the same to receive funds from any country.

Meanwhile, those who still do not have an account can open one at any bank, according to the CBK Regulation for Access to Payment Accounts for Basic Services, which for vulnerable groups and social schemes has no opening fee nor of maintenance, from January 1, 2024. Only in the four northern municipalities, there are four bank branches, three microfinance (lending) institutions, as well as over 15 non-bank financial institutions for payments. The number of branches and offices of financial institutions operating in that area is increasing, as financial inclusion is the objective of the CBK.
