After two centuries of neutral politics, Sweden is expected to officially become NATO's 32nd member today, a big step for a country that was once careful not to anger Russia.

Today in Washington, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson will ceremonially hand over the ratification documents to the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, after the long battle to secure the necessary support from all NATO members.

Kristersson is expected later in the day to attend the annual speech by President Joe Biden, who is trying to convince his rival Republican Party to approve new aid to Ukraine.

Sweden's flag is expected to be flown at the NATO headquarters in Brussels on Monday.

Russia has vowed "countermeasures" to Sweden's entry into NATO, especially if the alliance's troops and assets are stationed in the country.
