Denmark bans civilian drones, will close airspace during EU leaders' visit

Denmark will impose a general ban on civilian drone flights ahead of a visit by European leaders to Copenhagen next week.

Thomas Danielsen, Denmark's transport minister, announced on Sunday that the country's airspace will be closed between Monday and Friday.

EU heads of government will arrive on Wednesday to discuss suspected Russian interference in European airspace.

Drones were spotted at several military facilities in Denmark on Saturday night, following a week in which drone attacks caused the temporary closure of several Danish airports.

Drone attacks and other airspace violations have also been reported from Estonia, Poland and Norway.

Denmark has called the drones part of a "hybrid attack" but has not definitively said who it believes is responsible.

Mette Frederiksen, the prime minister, has suggested that Russia could be the main country "that poses a threat to European security." The Kremlin denies this claim.

Danielsen said the move to close the airspace would eliminate the risk of "confusing enemy drones with legitimate drones and vice versa."

Violating the ban could result in fines or even prison sentences of up to two years, the ministry warned.

Denmark has been one of Ukraine's most ardent supporters since the beginning of the Russian invasion and has also made great efforts to strengthen its own military capabilities.

On Friday evening, at least one drone was spotted over Karup Air Base, Denmark's largest facility.

This was one of several unexplained drone activities across Denmark since September 22nd.

The country's main international air hub, Copenhagen Airport, was closed for several hours last Monday after drones were spotted nearby.

Volodymyr Zelenksy, the president of Ukraine, said the sightings in Europe were part of the Kremlin's strategy to control the protection of its skies from Europe.
