Just days before he was due to stand trial on serious rape charges, Oslo police arrested Marius Borg Høiby, the adopted son of the heir to the Norwegian throne, on Sunday .

He is accused of assaulting a woman, making threats with a knife and violating restraining orders.

The Norwegian capital's Police District confirmed the arrest in a statement released on Monday, saying the 29-year-old was arrested on Sunday evening.

According to authorities, the incident occurred just two days before his trial for several alleged rape cases was due to begin.

Høiby is expected to appear before the Court of First Instance in Oslo on Tuesday, facing a total of 38 charges, including four alleged cases of rape and assault on his former partners.

The prosecution has requested his detention for four weeks, citing the risk of recidivism.

The accused has admitted several secondary charges, but denies the more serious charges, including those related to sexual violence.

Some of his former partners have appeared as civil parties in the process, while a court order prohibits him from any form of communication with them.

If convicted, Høiby faces up to 16 years in prison. The trial is expected to last until mid-March and has sparked great public interest in Norway.

The case is taking place in a particularly tense climate for the Norwegian royal family, after declassified documents from the US Department of Justice revealed that the accused's mother, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, had frequent communications with Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender, during the period 2011–2014.
