According to the data of demographic indicators from INSTAT for the last 10 years, it turns out that in 10 districts of Albania the number of the resident population has decreased at a fast rate. The population of Albania in 2013 was 2.89 million inhabitants, while over a decade the population was reduced by 4.7% registering 2.76 million inhabitants in total.
"Scan intel" has analyzed the data to understand how the population has moved according to counties during the period 2013-2023? During this time in Albania, the resident population has shrunk in 10 counties and increased only in two counties, that of Tirana and Durrës. INSTAT data on demographic indicators show that the district that was most damaged by the reduction of the resident population was that of Gjirokastra. A year ago, 27.7% fewer residents were registered in this district than in 2013. Then follows the district of Berat, where in 2023 this district registers nearly 111,400 inhabitants from 143,900 in 2013. Likewise, Dibra has had a significant decrease in population in relation to this period, where in nominal terms this decrease is found to be 22.8%. .
Even in districts such as Korçë, Kukës, Lezhë and Shkodër, the numbers of residents leaving remain worrying. Specifically, in Kukës the population has decreased by 16.9% in the last decade, in Korçë by 14.5% and in Lezë by 15.9%.
In contrast, counties such as Tirana and Durres were the only counties with a positive natural population increase. In Tirana in 2023, 925,268 inhabitants are registered or 15.5% more than in 2013. Meanwhile, in Durrës, the population growth turns out to be 5.8%, thus registering nearly 290,000 inhabitants from around 274,000 in 2013. Tirana occupies about 33.5% of the total population, continuing to be one of the most populated counties in the country, followed by Durrës and Fieri with 10.5% and 9.8% respectively. As for the other counties, five of them occupy respectively from 1.9% to 4.1% of the total population.
But what are the factors that have caused the population to shrink in the 10 event districts? The reduction of the population in the counties of Albania is a direct effect of the internal and external emigration of the population. Also, in an analogous analysis of the number of births in the last 10 years, it results that on a national scale, births fell by 37%, thus registering only 22,210 births in total, the lowest number in 3 decades. On the other hand, the displacement of a significant part of the population from the districts to cities such as Durrës and Tirana is related to an already global trend, that of urbanization. According to World Bank data, it appears that in Albania in 2013, 55% of Albanians lived in cities, while this rate has been increasing in the coming years. In 2022, the latest year for which official data is available, 64% of the population is concentrated in urban areas.
