"Sazan Real Estate" reacts after the protests in Tirana: Development will be decided by Albania and Albanians

The Sazan Real Estate Development company has reacted publicly regarding the project on Sazan Island and the Zvërnec area, while a CBS News report brings new details on the structure of investors and the stance of developers in the face of protests that have entered their fourth week.

In a statement to American media, the company emphasizes that the project is not yet final and is in the design phase.

“This project is still in the design and development phase, as our team continues to refine its scope, approach and vision through a process that prioritizes environmental protection and the promotion of Albania’s natural beauty,” the statement said.

Sazan Real Estate says it looks forward to continuing the public dialogue on the project, considering it an opportunity to make Albania an even more important tourist destination globally.

The CBS News report also reveals that among the investors in the project are brothers Moutaz and Ramez Al Khayyat, Qatar-based billionaires and heads of Assets Group. A company representative confirmed their involvement in the investment to US media for the first time.

According to documents reviewed by CBS News, Sazan Real Estate was initially registered in Qatar, and is the parent company of Zvërnec South Adriatic Development, the company that, according to local reports, holds the permit for the development of the project on the island of Sazan and in the Pishë Poro-Nartë area.

Earlier, on June 12, the director of Sazan Real Estate Development LLC, Asher Abehsera, reacted publicly for the first time through a post on the X platform, where he stated that for four years the company has been working to create "a world-class destination on the Albanian coast."

"For four years we have worked to create a world-class destination on the Albanian coast, based on careful design, environmental protection and long-term economic opportunities," he wrote.

According to Abehsera, the aim of the project is to promote Albania's natural beauties, create jobs and build an investment that future generations can be proud of.

He reiterated a message that echoes the statement to CBS News: “The future of this project will ultimately be determined by Albania and the Albanian people.”

The CBS News report comes as protests against the project have entered their fourth week and have morphed into a broader movement against the government and the political establishment.

Activists claim that there was no public consultation for the development of the resort and that the initial interventions have caused damage to the protected area of ??Pishe Poro-Narte.

On the other hand, the developers insist that the project is still in the concept phase and that their focus remains on responsible land management, environmental protection, and creating long-term value for local communities.
