The Fierza hydropower plant, the largest in the Drin cascade, has remained below the historical average for the lake level this year.

The not-so-good water situation found the HPP level in January 270.68 meters, significantly below the historical average of 275.5 meters. The gradual deterioration of Fierza continued even in February in relation to the average where it reached 268.28 meters to peak in March with 260.67 meters while the average for this period is 279.82 meters.

The start of rain and snow improved this balance in April, continuing with growth until May when the level, although it reached 289 meters, was still below the historical average for this period, which is 290.68.

The increase in energy prices on the stock market forced the Albanian Electric Power Corporation to base production already in June mainly in the country, although this increase became more pronounced in July. In June, the level of Fierza was 288 meters, while the historical average is 289.53 meters.

On August 15, the Albanian Power Corporation reported that it was producing 17,000 MWh of energy from HPPs in the country, thus trying to protect itself from expensive prices in the stock market, but also the inability to secure energy from the free market at the last moment. This has caused the HPP levels to continue to fall, where Fierza marked 278.62 meters. The energy reserve has decreased to 722.9 Gwh.

At these rates, if prices do not decrease and if there is no rain, October will be a difficult month for the energy sector in the country. Meanwhile, KESH anticipates that the thermal generators in Vlora will be operational in the fall.

Stock market prices

Currently, stock market prices continue to remain high. On the Hungarian Stock Exchange, 1 MHE of energy for June 16 was shown at an average of 500 euros at the base and 509 euros/MHE at the peak. Compared to the previous day, this increase was 17.18 percent at the base and 17.83 percent at the peak.

Meanwhile, on August 17, the price of one megawatt/hour of energy reached 553 euros/MWh at the base and 573 euros/MWh at the peak with a 12.48 percent increase compared to the previous day. The highest price was recorded for the 20:00 time zone where 1 MWh touched the level of 747.93 MWh, levels that are crazy and that warn that Europe and our country will face difficult months ahead.

Prices in the first part of August have been more stable than at the end of July, mostly due to a slowdown in energy demand as a result of the economic slowdown that is being observed in this period. /Monitor
