The European Union is working on a law that aims to curb the business models of social networks, with the aim of protecting children and young people. At least that's what European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Tuesday.

The many harms caused to children and adolescents by exposure to social networks are not a coincidence, "but the result of business models that treat our children's attention as a commodity," she said during a speech in Copenhagen.

Von der Leyen added that the European Union is focusing particularly on TikTok, X and Meta's platforms: Instagram and Facebook.

"We are taking action against TikTok and its addictive design, such as endless scrolling, autoplay and push notifications. The same applies to Meta, because we believe that Instagram and Facebook are not properly enforcing the minimum age limit of 13," she stated, quoted by La Repubblica.

The European Commission has also launched proceedings against Platform X for using the artificial intelligence tool Grok to create sexual images of women and children.

Von der Leyen added that by the end of the year, the Commission aims to crack down on "addictive and harmful design practices", such as "attention grabbing", complex contracts and "subscription traps".

The President of the European Commission also supported the establishment of strict rules to prohibit access to social networks for teenagers under a certain age.
