The Minister of Tourism and Environment, Mirela Kumbaro, shared today some good news for Albania: UNESCO has given the official recommendation for the declaration of the Vjosa Valley as a Biosphere Reserve. In a Facebook post, Kumbaro described this as an extraordinary international appreciation for the untouched nature and the continuous efforts in preserving the last wild river in Europe.

“Today, Vjosa is not just a river, but a model of sustainable development, where nature inspires,” writes Kumbaro. She emphasizes that this success is the fruit of long and dedicated work by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment and the National Agency for Protected Areas, from the historic visit of UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay in February 2023 to the technical work of Albanian experts on the ground.

The final inclusion of the Vjosa Valley in the list of Biosphere Reserves is expected to be approved in September by the relevant UNESCO Council, placing this natural asset on a global pedestal as a symbol of harmony between man and nature.
