Seismologist: the 3 cities most at risk from earthquakes and areas where there

Durrës, Elbasan and Dibra are considered to be the part most at risk from earthquakes in our country. Seismologist Edmond Dushi gave the details in an interview to the media.

"We can say that the southwestern part of the country, due to the autochthonous/historical earthquakes that are there and the continuous tectonic activity that it has, has significant seismic risk values. Meanwhile, almost the vast majority of the contact area, which includes Durrës, Tirana and a part of the cities that are in this area, have values ​​above 03g or 30 percent of the acceleration of free fall, which is taken as the basic criterion for assessing the seismic risk. So it means that these areas are already, if it will be built with this standard, they will be more protected in relation to the seismic phenomena that are allocated in this region".

The seismologist also showed two areas where seismic activity is low.

"Almost the entire territory of the country, with the exception of the areas of the Alps and the deep northeastern areas, which historically result in no significant seismic activity since they are less active in the tectonic sense than other areas of the country's territory."

But is there a repeating cycle of strong earthquake tremors?

"Of course there is a cycle, the earthquake is an unpredictable, but periodic, cyclical phenomenon. It means along active areas where earthquakes have occurred in the past and are expected to occur in the future. When we have a history of their monitoring, we have a clearer statistical picture of what this cycle is like. For the territory of the country, with the studies before 2000-2002, we can say that we can have the same periodicity of 30 to 40 years, of repetition of oscillations, of periods of high seismic activity, where strong earthquakes are not excluded. This was also evident due to history. In the 60s-80s, we had several powerful earthquakes in the territory of the country that occurred in certain areas".
