Although Albanian households "saved" without an increase in energy prices in the last months of 2022 for consumption over 800 kwh, they still have energy among the most expensive in the region.

Eurostat has published data on energy prices for European countries until the end of the second 6 months of 2022. The average price for Albanian household consumers is 0.0976 euro/kwh hour, which ranks the second most expensive country in the region, after Macedonia of the North (0.103 euro/kwh).

Montenegro has energy slightly cheaper than Albania (0.096), Bosnia and Herzegovina (0.0893), Serbia (0.0869). Turkey has energy at 0.087 euro/kwh.

Kosovo had the cheapest energy for households in Europe until the end of 2022, at 0.0637 euro/kwh. On April 1, the price of electricity in Kosovo increased by 15 percent, and this is the second time that it has become more expensive in the span of 14 months.

Meanwhile, about 200,000 families benefited from a monthly subsidy for the cost of energy for the winter season, while in the following months the government will subsidize only families in need.

In Albania, in September of last year, the government warned that energy over consumption of 800 kwh would be more expensive at 42 lek/hour, for the October-December period (from 9.5 lek), as a result of the difficult situation in the international stock markets, but more then withdrew from this decision due to the improvement of the water situation.

Europe, Electricity hit record prices in 2022

According to Eurostat, in the second half of 2022, average electricity prices for household consumers in the European Union continued to show a sharp increase, compared to the same period of 2021, from €23.5 per 100 kWh to 28 ,4 € for 100 kWh. Average gas prices also increased compared to the same period in 2021 from €7.8 per 100 kWh to €11.4 per 100 kWh in the second half of 2022. These prices are the highest recorded by Eurostat.

After a significant rise in prices that began before the Russian invasion of Ukraine but continued to grow until the second half of 2022, electricity and natural gas prices have recently shown signs of stabilization, partly due to policies and interventions of EU governments.
