Dritan Rexhepi, accused of ordering the kidnapping, murder and disappearance of Jan Prenga in 2019, testifies for the first time at the Criminal Court of Kosovo.
Rexhepi: At the end of 2019 I was outside Albania. I was in prison in Ecuador, I was sentenced to 13 years for drug trafficking. Are you going to ask me about the case or are you going to hold a moral trial for me? I had been serving my sentence for 5 years and 4 months. I had contacts with people outside through the prison cell. There were a lot of Albanians in prison there, I was close to someone from Kosovo. I was accused of drug trafficking with 10 other people, at that time an Albanian was also involved. He was found innocent. I heard about Gentian Docaj (Funiqi) in the media and in the file I read. The name means nothing to me. My lawyer brought me documents from the Florence prison, which say that he and I were not in the same sector. I have never known Gentian Funiq, never in my life. I have never heard of Martin Bleta, nor Korado Geshtenja. From prison I have not made any kind of cooperation to give money related to drug trafficking. At the end of 2019, I had no information about the theft of a quantity of drugs in the Portsmouth port of London. I found out about it from the media in Albania. I heard from my family that in Albania I was accused of something that had happened in Albania.
I learned from family members that I was accused of kidnapping a person who had disappeared. I tried to get information from the prosecutor's office through a family member, but I couldn't. I tried to get information from this family member and they told me that there were some wiretaps between a person who said I was Gramozi from Vlora and the family members. These wiretaps have never been released. Why don't you release them, when it is said that there are wiretaps between me and the victim's family members. You have boarded the gas train and asked to go where you want. I am not the person. The victim's brother himself came here and said these words. Do you want to make a confrontation between me and him, I have no objections. Or should we do it with photos? We do. I don't know those people. I am responsible for what I do, not what others say. You haven't done any kind of procedure. Why haven't you done anything? Don't I have rights in this country? They told me about Jani Prenga, my family members, my sister's husband Dorjan Velaj. He met a journalist at the prosecutor's office, and I spoke to the journalist through my brother-in-law. Through my lawyer, I received photocopied newspapers. While my brother-in-law went to the Tirana prosecutor's office about this matter, he met a journalist and told him two things. I told him, "Mr. Journalist, I am not the person you are talking about." I spoke to Artan Hoxha. I gave him some photos and he published them.
Rexhepi's lawyer: Since the journalist is in the courtroom, we request that he be called as a witness.
Prosecution: For us, it is not valuable to call him as a witness. If he wants, he can leave the courtroom.
After this, the court decided that Artan Hoxha should leave the courtroom for the interrogation phase of Dritan Rexhepi.
Rexhepi: My problem was only the hostility, because I was being talked about. It said Gramoz from Vlora. I am not that person. You have to ask yourself. Why is the name Gramoz and Dritan Rexhepi linked?
Prosecutor: How many names did you have?
Rexhepi: Until I was 13, they called me Gramoz, then everyone called me Dritan. Even today, I am not married. I had a 12-year relationship with an Ecuadorian woman and I have two sons with her.
Prosecutor: After you spoke to the journalist, what happened next? Dritan or Artan Hoxha, was he a name known to you before, had you ever met him?
Rexhepi: No, I didn't know him, I had never met him. Even later, I didn't have any communication with any journalist.
