We rank among the last in Europe for generosity and social support

Generosity, support for those in need, together with hospitality have historically been Albanian traditions, which were constantly emphasized in school textbooks, or in histories and books by various authors.

But these traditions now seem to belong only to history. The latest "Gallup" survey, carried out as part of the 2023 happiness index, shows that Albania ranks among the last in Europe, as far as the indicators of generosity and social support are concerned.

The situation is completely different for the citizens of Kosovo, who continue to preserve and implement these traditions, ranking among the first in the world in terms of generosity.

Social support is an indicator that, according to the report's methodology, is related to having someone to lean on in times of trouble.

The question addressed to the respondents is: "If you were in trouble, do you have relatives or friends that you can count on to help you whenever you need it, right?"

In this indicator, Albania ranks last in Europe and 29th from the bottom in the world, and there is a difference from other European countries. The social support of Albanians is the same as that of countries like Congo, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Honduras, etc.

In the region, after Albania, North Macedonia has the lowest social support.

Kosovo is ranked among the 40 countries in the world that support each other, while there is no data for Serbia and Montenegro.

The countries with the highest social support in the world are New Zealand, Denmark, Finland, Iceland.

Even in the other indicator, that of generosity, Albania ranks among the last in Europe.

To measure the indicator of generosity, respondents are asked the question: "Have you donated money to a charity in the past month?"

According to the report, this is a clear indicator of a sense of positive community engagement and a key way for people to connect with each other. Research shows that in all cultures, beginning in early childhood, people are attracted to behaviors that benefit other people.

Albania is among the least generous countries in Europe, but the (negative) record is held by Greece, together with Bulgaria, Romania, and Portugal. The citizens of Kosovo are again ranked much better than us, among the 25 most generous countries in the world.

The low expected support from friends and relatives, together with the low income per capita, and the high perception of corruption are some of the factors that rank Albania among the unhappiest countries in Europe.

In the latest Happiness report, published by the United Nations Organization, Albania has lost one position, ranking 91st out of 146 countries in total.

Among European countries, Albania leaves behind North Macedonia (92), Turkey (102) and Georgia (106).

Although Kosovo's per capita income is lower than Albania's, Kosovo's citizens still rank much better than Albania's in the happiness index, as they gain points from the high level of support they have for each other.

Kosovo was ranked 34th in the world and the happiest in the region. Behind it is Serbia in 45th place. Bosnia-Herzegovina and Montenegro were ranked 63rd and 71st respectively.
