On June 14, 2018, 18-year-old Antonio Karaifili was found hanging in the forest in Voskopoja. The incident shocked the area. Initially, the case was reported as a suicide. However, Antonio's family has always had doubts.
The suspicions revolved around Antonio's fiancée, Kejsi Spahillari. After seven years, thanks to prosecutor Vasjana Postol and the persistence of lawyer Arben Llangozi, the shocking truth has come to light. Kejsi Spahillari had created a parallel relationship with 65-year-old Rexhep Vathin. According to the investigation, Antonio Karafili caught Kejsi Spahillari and Rexhep Vathin in the act of having an intimate relationship.
Both, in order to keep the secret, killed Antonio Karafili, and then staged his suicide by hanging himself on a pine tree. Suspicions arose from the fact that Kejsi Spahillari had informed Antonio's relatives about the incident, showing them exactly where the dead body was hanging. Secondly, there was no sign of resin or pine bark on the victim's body during the hanging. So, there was no trace of hanging on the pine tree. On the other hand, traces of Vathi's DNA were found on the accused's sheets.
The 24-year-old is in Canada where she has started a family, while the Korça Court has ordered her to be sentenced to "prison arrest" in absentia. Meanwhile, Rexhep Vathi ended his life in August 2024.
Conversations between Kejsi and Rexhep Vathi after the crime:
Rexhep Vathi, who was considered an eyewitness, stated at the time that on the evening when 18-year-old Antonio Karafili was found hanging from a tree in the forest, he had seen and heard 4 people screaming.
But Rexhep Vathi, 65 years old at the time, in the leaked conversations he has with Casey, is heard telling him to be careful, as he himself would not tell what he had seen that night in the forest.
Witness Rexhep Vathi: I admit, I brought you words today, with a signal, you heard it yourself, you know it better than me, you today..., you are not stupid, you today entered a mature woman, eh...?
Casey Spahillari: Yes!
Witness Rexhep Vathi: You're not, but you'll be very careful, Kejsi! You'll open up to me, like you opened up to your father, and you have to tell me everything, regardless of whether you know anything or not, I was there, I wasn't there... You have to tell me everything, because you have my back like a father... Did the police call you?
Kejsi Spahillari: Yes, from the beginning.
Witness Rexhep Vathi: What did they tell you?
Kejsi Spahillari: Just what happened, the evidence of the event and that's it!
Witness Rexhep Vathi: About that conversation I told you, nothing can be done, we can't resolve it...
Casey Spahillari: Seriously?
Witness Rexhep Vathi: Well, not for anything, I also needed a point of support here, because I will come every year, if I see a woman, to be...
Kejsi Spahillari: I'll look, I'll ask again, because just to get to know myself, I asked two or three of my friends, I said if you have any in the neighborhood, we have them here, I said...
Witness Rexhep Vathi: Listen, she should be a serious woman, worth it..!
Casey Spahillari: I understand, yes!
Witness Rexhep Vathi: Do you understand correctly?
Casey Spahillari: Well..
Witness Rexhep Vathi: I have a type, even though I'm from the north, but I don't go from branch to branch. Kejsi, the rumors are very, very, very bad, but don't forget, the state takes it slowly, whoever calls you, civilian or military, I don't know anything... I was afraid to go to the forest, I wanted to scream, there were some foreigners there, I was ashamed, I felt embarrassed, I didn't scream, I called my brother on the phone. You say these rumors, that if you call us, call me, I speak differently, I speak things, so that you don't get hurt at all, but to be safe, you have to be very careful! Shall we share it for today?
Casey Spahillari: Yes!
Witness Rexhep Vathi: Casey, okay?
Casey Spahillari: Yes!
Witness Rexhep Vathi: That's all I can say! Goodbye!
Casey Spahillari: Bye!
Witness Rexhep Vathi: Protect yourself!
Reaction of lawyer Arben Llangozi:
After 7 years of long, tiring and often hopeless battle, I can finally say with full voice: justice was served in the tragic case of citizen Antonio Karaifili.
An event that attempted to be hidden under the guise of a "suicide", but which was essentially a murder disguised, covered up and distorted by certain structures of the justice system and forensic medicine in Korça and the central medical center in Tirana who created false evidence.
Antonio Karaifili was found hanging from a tree. A scenario presented as suicide, but from the beginning it smelled of manipulation, fabrication and flagrant violation of the truth. From the first days, it was understood that something was wrong. The forensic medical examination reports did not match reality.
To cover up the murder, over 10 manipulated expert examinations were conducted, and forensic medicine, instead of serving as a guarantor of science and truth, became a tool in the hands of those seeking silence.
Instead of investigating it as a murder, the Korça Prosecution tried to close the case as a suicide. It requested three times to suspend the investigation, but justice still prevailed. Three times, Judge Arben Lera refused the suspension, returning the case for investigation and seeking the truth, not the comfort of a closed file.
Judge Arben Lera, with courage and integrity, became a shield of justice. In a system often subject to pressures and dark interests, he chose to do the right thing. In the end, he ordered the Prosecutor's Office to continue the murder investigation, sending a clear message: justice is no one's bargain.
Meanwhile, within the Korça Prosecutor's Office, for 7 years in a row, this case passed into the hands of about 7 prosecutors, who either gave up or chose to remain silent. But finally, a new voice, an honest voice, emerged on the scene, prosecutor Vasjana Postoli. New to the job, but equipped with courage, professionalism and honesty, Ms. Postoli took on the heavy burden of uncovering this event. And she succeeded. She took the investigation to the end, uncovering the truth that had been tried to hide at all costs.
This case is a living example of how corruption and institutional silence can hinder justice, but they cannot stop it forever. It is also a testament to the power of perseverance and dedication, because as a lawyer, I have not stopped pursuing this case for 7 years. I have fought every obstacle, I have refused to give up, and I have stood by the victim's family until the end.
A crucial role in this battle was also played by the investigative show STOP and Ora News television, which gave their voice when many media outlets were silent. They served as beacons of light on a dark path, keeping this event alive in the public eye and giving hope to a family devastated by injustice.
Today, I say that Antonio Karaifili did not commit suicide. He was murdered. And now this has been proven. Justice delays, but it does not forget.
This is a message to every citizen who has faced injustice. Don't give up. The truth is powerful. And when honest people — judges, prosecutors, lawyers, media, and citizens — come together, no crime can remain hidden.
I will continue to be the voice of the voiceless, as long as I have the strength.
